Shooting without a Director

I say, if you've got enough money (and i mean ENOUGH MONEY), a good script, a good cast and crew, then it doesn't particularly matter too much if the director's crap and crap as crap. I believe that with enough money, the shoot will run itself. Yeah maybe the demarcation of roles will shift slightly but the majority of the directorial work will be covered by the DP and the producer will be in charge.

So the shoot may probably turn out a film that many people will want to see!

Hey there.

Ive never been on a pro film set but I agree with the above. If you have a massive crew they are going to do there job. You have you actors on set, you have a script. The movie is going to get made. There is just too much money being spent per second for it not to be.

Beside this must go on. I mean Brett Ratner has made 2 movies this way.

Where does the over all vision come from? The producers running the production, but who gives it a singular and unique feel? DPs will block out shots, arrange lighting, but who looks after the actors? Who knows where the shots will fit in the finished film? Who pulls every things togeather? The Director! Yes a professional crew could see a production through, but the results will be soulless, and dire. A collection of individual shots with no direction or pace.

For most film viewers, they can't tell the difference between a 'soulless' film and one that's full of 'soul'. yes maybe they'd think that something was missing but can't quite put the finger on what.

I have been an observer on a few (3) big productions (not HUGE!! just a few mill's budget-which is big by my standards) and they are fairly efficiently run.

they are run well because everyone knows their job. i'm not saying you don't need a director, i'm just saying the director is not GOD and that big productions are to an extent, able to run themselves provided the sort of film they are making is fairly conventional, standard stuff.

What!!! A film only gets made because of what a director does. A top Director will liase with all depts during pre-production, ensuring that everyone is singing from the same song sheet. During shooting he will literally call the shots. And during editing and post, he will make sure that HIS vision of what the film is to be comes true. A film without a director is like a ship without a captain.
